Severe weather forecast for Canberra this week

The Bureau of Meteorology has forecast thunderstorms and possible flash flooding to the Canberra region towards the second half of the week.

The bureau has warned of up to 50 millimetres of heavy rain, strong winds and possible flash flooding in Canberra from Wednesday to Friday.

ACT Emergency Services Agency issued a statement on Monday night advising residents to prepare their homes.

"With recent rain and soil moisture very high, the risk of damage from falling trees is increased," a spokesperson said.

"The Canberra community are reminded to do what you can to prepare your home for storm and the chance of localised flash flooding."

Emergency services advise residents to stay indoors away from windows, move their car under cover or away from trees and secure loose items around the house, yard and balcony.

A.C.T. COVID-19 NEWS:

In the event of a storm, emergency services advise residents to keep at least eight metres away from fallen power lines or objects that may be energised, such as fences.

"Remember to never drive, walk or ride through floodwater," the spokesperson said.

There's a medium chance of rain hitting Canberra on Tuesday afternoon and evening, with a near 100 per cent likelihood of rain on Wednesday afternoon and evening, according to the BOM.

The BOM has forecast up to 25 millimetres of rain on Thursday, with rain clouds unlikely to clear until the weekend.

For emergency help during flood and storm, call the ACT State Emergency Service on 132 500. If it is life-threatening, call emergency Triple Zero (000).
