'Severe thunderstorms' forecast for European holiday spots

Holidaymakers heading to the Med can expect 'severe thunderstorms' that could bring 'damaging winds, flooding and hail.'

The warning came in a BBC forecast which predicted that plumes of volatile stormy weather could move across Italy and Greece in the next 24 hours.

Meteorologist Chris Fawkes said southern parts of Italy and areas of Greece would get the worst of the conditions.

He said: "We could have some flash flooding from these storms. Also the risk of some damaging wind gusts and some fairly large hail as well.

“To the east of those storms it’s dry and sunny in Turkey and Crete. Further west, for Spain and Portugal, a lot of dry weather here. On Wednesday we see those thunderstorms working their way into the western areas of Turkey.”

Closer to home, BBC Weather forecaster Matt Taylor predicted a pleasant early part of the week, the Express reports.

However, by Wednesday the dry conditions will give way to a low-pressure wet weather front moving in from the west.

This will move through Northern Ireland and Scotland late on Wednesday, before moving further south to bring rainfall for much of England and Wales by Friday.

How to stay safe during a thunderstorm

There will be sunshine along the east coast due to the clear skies through the night with sunshine becoming hazier in the west coast.

The forecaster warned that towards the end of the week things would begin to change.

Mr Taylor said: “As we go into the second half of the week, things start to change.

“This low-pressure system gets closer and closer.

“Not quite with us for Wednesday across southern and eastern areas with a dry and bright day to come again, and lots of sunshine around, particularly across England and Wales.”
