'Severe thunderstorms' forecast by Met Office which warns they cause 'danger to life'

Experts at the Met Office have issued a 'danger to life' weather warning as 'severe thunderstorms' are set to lash the UK.

A yellow alert, spanning the entire nation, is in place all of today (Tuesday), Wednesday and Thursday.

The warning reads: "Some places are likely to see severe thunderstorms early next week - but there is significant uncertainty in location and timing.

"There is a small chance of fast flowing or deep floodwater causing danger to life.

"There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes and large hail."

Disruption to public transports is also likely during the storms.

Yesterday, Aberystwyth in west Wales was hit by an intense period of rain.

Over the course of 20 minutes several centimetres hit the coastal town.

The deluge proved too much for part of Aberyswyth's drainage system, which overflowed.

Temperatures throughout the week are expected to remain high following the mercury peaking at 35C over the weekend.

The thermometer will reach a sweltering 30C in Bristol today, and wall to wall sunshine is expected.

UK weather forecast

Tuesday:

Another hot day for many southern parts with good sunny spells. Scattered thunderstorms breaking out for many parts again with heavy rain and hail, these persisting into the night.

Outlook for Wednesday to Friday:

Sunny periods mixed with areas of cloud and heavy, thundery showers Wednesday and Thursday. Further showers Friday. Very warm for many parts, hot across much of the south and southeast.
