
The State Emergency Service has advised residents move vehicles under cover and away from trees as severe weather bears down on Newcastle and the Hunter.
Severe thunderstorms are likely to produce damaging winds and large hailstones in the warning area over the next several hours, forecasters the for Bureau of Meteorology have warned.
Storm activity is expected to hang over the region for the remainder of the afternoon before easing in the evening, a forecaster has said.
The Bureau has received reports of hail up to around two-centimetres at Dubbo around midday.
The weather is being caused by a trough and front moving across the state that is expected to ease as it passes over the Tasman Sea.
Grey and threatening skies are expected to give way to warm and settled conditions over the weekend. Temperatures in the low 30s on Sunday, rising into the high 30s on Monday.
