Severe M6 delays after lorry and car in Lymm Interchange smash

There are severe delays on the M6 this morning after a rush hour smash between a lorry and a car by Lymm Interchange.

Images released by Highways England show queues of traffic after two lanes had to be closed on the mototrway southbound after the crash at Junction 20 for the M56 (Lymm Interchange).

Travel monitors INRIX say there are "severe delays" with traffic queuing for seven miles.

At this stage no details have been given of any injuries but INRIX say the lorry has already been removed from the scene.

Highways England say there are currently delays of up to 40 minutes with congestion back to Junction 22 Winwick and urged motorists to allow extra time for their journeys.

Warning motorists Highways England tweeted: "M6 southbound at #J20 / Lymm Services (#LymmInterchange #A50 #LymmPoplar2000Services) 2 lanes have been closed due to a collision.

"Congestion is currently back to #J22 on the southbound over #ThelwallViaduct."

At 8am traffic was temporaily stopped to allow all vehicles involved to be removed.

All lanes were reopened just before 8.30am but Highways England said delays would remain.
