'Severe' disruption on Metrolink as trams unable to stop at several stations

Damage to overhead lines is causing 'severe' disruption on the Metrolink, with trams unable to stop at several stations.

Trams are can not stop at St Peter’s Square, Cornbrook, Deansgate or Trafford Bar.

It is unclear what caused the damage to overhead lines near Cornbrook station, but the disruption is expected to last for most of today.

Such an incident on the day the Manchester derby will be played at Old Trafford would usually cause huge disruption.

But fans are unable to attend the game, with the city remaining under tier three restrictions.

All lines of the Metrolink network are affected, other than the Bury to Piccadilly service.

Engineers are on site and are working on the problem.

Tram tickets are being accepted on bus and train services, and replacement buses are also being run.

Metrolink is also reminding people using public transport to wear face masks and socially distance where possible.

Danny Vaughan, Transport for Greater Manchester’s Head of Metrolink, said: “I’d like to apologise to customers for the disruption today that is impacting most of the network.

"Engineers are on site trying to fix the damage and staff are across the network to help passengers.

"We’re working hard to resolve the problem and return all services as soon as possible, but anyone planning to use Metrolink should check the latest information before they travel and allow extra time for their journey."
