'Severe' delays on some Metrolink services due to staff shortages caused by Covid-19

Tram users across Manchester are continuing to face delays this evening due to staff shortages.

According to Manchester Metrolink, which operates the tram services across the county, there are numerous staff shortages as a result of Covid-19.

This has been causing 'severe delays'.

Multiple lines across Greater Manchester have faced disruptions, including the Bury line, Ashton-under-Lyne line and the East Didsbury line.

On the official Twitter account, Manchester Metrolink tweeted which services were facing difficulties as a result of Coronavirus impacting staffing levels.

And the Transport for Greater Manchester website urges people to check their tram service before they travel, writing: "Due to driver availability severe delays are in place on multiple lines."

There was also a 'medical emergency' on the Eccles via Media City and Trafford Park line this evening, at around 7 pm, which caused services to be temporarily suspended.

According to the Transport for Greater Manchester website, various tram lines are facing 'severe delays.'

These include Ashton-under-Lyne, Bury, East Didsbury, Eccles, Manchester Airport, MediaCityUk, Rochdale via Oldham and Trafford Park.

The Altrincham line is also facing minor delays currently.

Passengers were instead encouraged to use their tickets on various bus services to reach their destination.

Local bus services are currently accepting pre-purchased tram tickets, with live updates and alternate routes shared to the Transport for Greater Manchester website.

One Twitter user suggested that journey delays should be advertised clearly on platforms, adding that people are "buying tickets and then waiting over an hour."

Others complained about the repeated delays they have been facing in recent weeks.

It comes amid recent fears about the Omicron Covid-19 variant, which has seen its number of cases increase by more than 50 percent today, December 5.

It is not known whether this has directly impacted staffing levels.
