POWAY, Calif. _ Several people were shot Saturday at a synagogue in Poway, San Diego County authorities said
A man has been detained for questioning in connection with the shooting at the Chabad of Poway.
Deputies from the Poway station were called to Chabad Way just before 11:30 a.m. local time, the Sheriff's Department said.
The victims were taken to Palomar Medical Center in Escondido, Calif. Their conditions were unknown.
"Please respect the medical privacy of victims & their families during this difficult time. Remain clear of the area as this investigation will take several hours," the Sheriff's Department said.
The synagogue was hosting a Passover holiday celebration this weekend, according to its Facebook page.
Authorities have taped off the area around Chabad and a command post has been set up at Chaparral Elementary School just north of the congregation.
Several neighbors reported hearing the gunshots, and some were evacuated from nearby homes to the school temporarily as a precaution.
The incident comes seven months after a man with a history of posting anti-Semitic and anti-immigrant social media messages opened fire at a temple in Pittsburgh, killing 11 people and wounding six more.
The Anti-Defamation League called the incident "the deadliest attack on the Jewish community in the history of the United States" and it underscored growing hate against Jews.
Officials have not said the motive for the shooting in Poway, which is an upscale suburb north of San Diego.
