Tokyo confirmed 4,228 new cases of novel coronavirus infection on Wednesday, down by 1,158 from a week earlier, the Tokyo metropolitan government said. The daily tally in the capital declined compared to the same day a week earlier for the third day in a row.
Seriously ill COVID-19 patients in the capital rose by nine from Tuesday to a record 277, with COVID-19-linked deaths of 11 people in their 30s to 90s confirmed.
The prefectures of Aichi and Miyagi, which are to be newly added to the list of prefectures subject to the coronavirus state of emergency on Friday, also saw surges in their numbers of infections on Wednesday. Aichi Prefecture logged a record 1,815 new cases, up nearly 200 from 1,617 on the previous day, while Miyagi Prefecture confirmed a record 301 new cases.
Osaka Prefecture logged a record 2,808 new cases, with the death of a COVID-19 patient confirmed.
Hyogo Prefecture confirmed 1,088 new cases, repeating the record number set on Aug. 18. Okinawa Prefecture reported a record 809 new cases.
The health ministry confirmed 1,964 seriously ill COVID-19 patients nationwide on Wednesday, up 29 from the previous day, marking a record daily number for the 13th day in a row.
