NEW YORK _ A gunman dressed in a white lab coat and carrying a semi-automatic rifle opened fire in a Bronx hospital on Friday afternoon, and at least one person was dead, police said.
The New York Police Department identified the gunman as a recently dismissed doctor, Henry Michael Bello, 45, who according to the hospital's website worked in family medicine. The New York Police Department said they believed the shooting was related to a workplace dispute.
The New York Police Department's chief spokesman, J. Peter Donald, reported through his Twitter account that "one shooter is deceased at the hospital."
At least five other people were shot, according to police.
One of the largest hospitals in the borough, the Bronx-Lebanon Hospital Center was under lockdown Friday afternoon, the streets closed, helicopters whirring overhead and sharp shooters stationed nearby. Staff evacuating the hospital were told to come out with their hands raised so that they would not be mistaken for a suspect.
