A number of the migrants found inside a truck onboard a ferry bound for Rosslare have now reportedly gone missing.
The group, which consisted of 15 men and a teenage boy, was discovered inside the container of an Irish lorry by a Stena Line worker on Thursday.
It is believed the migrants, all from believed to be Kurds from Iraq and Iran, travelled for up to 20 days to get to Cherbourg, France before they entered the container and arrived in Rosslare.
Gardai say the juvenile is now in the care of TUSLA, but it has been reported that several of the adult men, aged between 20 and 35, left the Direct Provision Centre in Baleskin, north Dublin where they were staying.
The Irish Times reports that some of the men left the accommodation on Friday night and they remain unaccounted for.
Garda sources believe the men had intended to travel to the UK and had gotten into the trailer, believing it to be bound for Britain.
They believe the men may now be attempting to make their way to the UK, either by stowing away on another ferry or by travelling to Northern Ireland to claim asylum there.
Migrants who apply for international protection in Ireland are not required to remain in State-run accommodation.
Sources say the men have not committed an offence by leaving the Direct Provision centre.
When contacted for comment, a garda spokesperson told The Irish Daily Mirror: "An Garda Síochána continue to investigate the criminal aspect of this investigation."
