Dec. 16--Several southbound lanes of Interstate 5 through the Grapevine will be closed until at least 6 p.m. Wednesday because of a big rig crash and chemical spill, according to the California Highway Patrol.
A truck carrying ethyl alcohol, sodium chloride and other chemicals drove off the freeway and into an embankment near Vista Del Lago Road at about 11 p.m. Tuesday, said CHP Officer Chad Guin. The condition of the driver was unknown Wednesday morning, but he was alert and informed officers that he was carrying chemicals, Guin said.
Three southbound freeway lanes have been closed in the area near Pyramid Lake to allow hazardous materials crews to clean the spill and for workers to repair a damaged guard rail where the truck went off the road, Guin said.
"Unfortunately, the cleanup is going to take a while," Guin said.

One southbound lane of the freeway remains open, he said. Northbound lanes were temporarily closed late Tuesday but have all reopened, he said.
