A bus crashed into an embankment Monday night on the Indiana Toll Road, injuring four children. | Indiana State Police

An 82-year-old bus driver has been charged with driving while intoxicated after crashing in northwest Indiana with 47 people on board and injuring four children.

The bus was returning Monday night from a Bulls game at the United Center when it veered off the Indiana Toll Road at 10:30 p.m. and crashed into a gravely embankment near Cline Avenue, Indiana State Police said.

The front tires of the bus were lifted off the ground, and some passengers were tossed and thrown from their seats, police said.

Four children, between the ages of 10 and 14, and an adult were treated at hospitals for head and neck pain, police said.

The bus driver, Wilton Carr, of Gary, was charged with four counts of driving while intoxicated, two of them felonies, police said. The bus was owned by Jesus Saves Missionary Baptist Church in Gary.
