Several cars torched in late night fire which kept people awake with 'loud bangs'

Five cars were set on fire in the middle of the night in a Swansea trading estate.

Mid and West Wales Fire Service crews from Gorseinon , Swansea Central and Morriston headed to the blaze at Mardy Industrial Estate at 12.19am this morning.

The cars were on fire outside units five and six of the estate, which is home to many different businesses.

Fire crews used two hose reel jets, foam, and two sets of breathing apparatus to tackle the fire.

They also forced their way into a couple of the units to make sure the fire had not spread into those.

Firefighters left the scene at 2.20am, after bringing the blaze under control 24 minutes earlier.

South Wales Police also went to the scene and are investigating the cause of the fire.

The noise of the blaze kept many people awake in the area with "loud bangs and popping" being heard.

One person tweeted: "Large fire keeping residents awake with loud bangs and popping in the Gorseinon / Garden Village area of Swansea. Hope everyone's safe and accounted for."

A South Wales Police spokeswoman said: "We were called at 12.30am today to reports of a fire. It appears a number of vehicles were involved.

"We are assisting the fire and rescue service with their investigation into the cause.

"Anyone with information should contact 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 quoting occurrence 1900301472."

The fire service has placed tape around the area where the gutted vehicles are located.

Pictures taken this morning reveal a scene of twisted wreckage, with substantial heat damage to a building behind the seat of the fire.

Reacting to the blaze, local councillor Ken Jones said: "It's not good news, particularly when it concerns cars. It's quite serious."

He said it wasn't the first attack of late in the area.

"There were some cars done down near the football club about six weeks ago, they were set alight," he added.
