The 63rd running of the Vermont Milk Bowl took a turn for the worse at the start of the second segment at Thunder Road Speedbowl.
The event features three segments, and the field is completely inverted. The unusual format doesn't award the first driver across the finish line the checkered flag. Whoever ends the race with the best average finish takes home the trophy.
That decision to put the slowest cars out front proved unwise on Sunday as the driver restarting third lost control and slid sideways under throttle. The check-up ignited a multi-car incident, and about a dozen drivers piled into it with some cars climbing up over one another.

No one was injured in the restart melee. In other images, you can clearly see that there are three different cars stacked on top of each other.
Ever seen race cars stacked three high before? Me either. pic.twitter.com/2cqNoEU8c7
