Several busy Dublin city centre streets will soon be closed off at weekends, here's why

Weekend trials for pedestrianised areas around Dublin City Centre will take place over the coming weeks as part of a new plan.

The pilot will see areas near Grafton Street become a car-free zone on Saturdays and Sundays from 11am to 7pm beginning on July 25.

Streets included in the pedestrian plans - which will run for four weekends - include the busy South Anne Street, Duke Street, Drury Street and Dame Court.

Green Party Councillor Michael Pidgeon thinks the scheme will be a huge boost to local businesses in the areas.

He said: "I think anyone who has been in the area, and has been along South William Street in particular, will know that it's an area where pedestrianisation would be a great idea."

He added: "There's very little car traffic, the streets are almost entirely commercial so there's a huge amount of footfall."
