Seventy percent of Gedling came out to vote in one of the most hotly-contested seats

More than 50,000 people in Gedling have come out to vote at this year's General Election - which is a 70 percent turnout.

Gedling is the fourth most marginal seat in the county, with a tussle between Labour and the Conservatives.

Long-serving Labour MP and former head teacher Vernon Coaker hopes to hold off the Conservative challenge after 22 years in control.

But it is set to be a tough night for him; as the exit polls predict this seat could fall back into the hands of the Conservatives.

Returning officer for Gedling, Karen Bradford, said out of 71,366 people, there were 50,099 verified papers.

Overall, there was a turnout of 70 percent.

At the last General Election it was higher at 73 percent.

In 2017, Labour achieved 26,833 votes compared to the Conservatives 22,139.

Labour won with a majority of 4,694.

Tom Randall, Conservative, is hoping to claw more votes from Labour this time around.

The exit polls suggest for Gedling there is a 56 percent chance of a Labour hold and a 44 percent chance of a Conservative gain.

In the referendum, 55.6 percent of people in Gedling voted to Leave.

Standing this year is also Graham Hunt from the Brexit Party, Jim Norris from The Green Party and Anita Prabhakar for the Liberal Democrats.
