FORT WORTH, Texas _ A seventh inmate from a federal medical prison in Fort Worth died of coronavirus, nine days before he was scheduled to be released from FMC Fort Worth.
Vernon Adderley, 56, died on Monday and his release was scheduled for May 19. He had served about 19 years in prison, according to court records.
Adderley was diagnosed with coronavirus on April 29 at Federal Medical Center Fort Worth. He had a fever, was short of breath and had other COVID-19 related symptoms. He was taken to the hospital when he became dehydrated and had weakness in his lower extremities.
On May 4, Adderley was put on a ventilator. On Monday, he died at John Peter Smith Hospital, the Bureau of Prisons said in a press release.
Adderley had long-term, preexisting conditions, the BOP said, but did not specify what those conditions were.
Adderley was sentenced in the Southern District of New York to 420 months for narcotics conspiracy, conspiracy to deal in firearms without a license, and using and carrying a firearm during a narcotics crime.
He had been in custody at FMC Fort Worth since July 30, 2019, and was granted a sentence reduction in 2019 under the First Step Act.
As of Thursday, 642 inmates at FMC Fort Worth had tested positive for COVID-19. Eighteen of those have recovered, according to the BOP's website. Out of all the country's federal prisons, FMC Fort Worth has the second-highest number of active cases of coronavirus as of Thursday.
Six other men have died at the prison from coronavirus.
On April 22, Arnoldo Almeida was the first inmate from the prison to die from coronavirus. Donnie Grabener, 65, died on April 25, and Oscar Ortiz, 78, died April 24.
On May 2, Kevin Ivy, 59, died within six days of being diagnosed with COVID-19.
Guadalupe Ramos, 56, died at John Peter Smith Hospital early Sunday, hours before his family planned to take him off life support, his niece, Veronica Chavez, said.
Thomas Rogers, 79, died Tuesday.
