Seven-year-old girl scales Everest base camp

MOHALI: At seven, Saanvi Sood, a Class II student of Yadavindra Public School, Mohali became the youngest person to scale the Everest base camp. She reached the summit on June 9. For the young mountaineer, this is the precursor to higher peaks.

"It was tough but I was determined to reach the summit. Some day, I will scale the Everest," she said. She scaled the summit with her father Deepak Sood, a civil contractor with projects in Himachal Pradesh. Her proud father said, "She got inspiration after watching the film, 'Everest.' As I have business in Himachal Pradesh, she was fascinated by the mountains. She has been accompanying me to smaller mountain peaks but after watching the film, she was so inspired that she asked me if we could go to Everest. However, since she is only seven, she was not allowed to go beyond the base camp. She reached a height of 5,364 metres."

A few days ago, Rhythm Mamania, a Worli resident, became the youngest mountaineer to climb the Mount Everest base camp. The young skater took 11 days to complete the trek and reach base camp, situated at 5,364 metres. She was accompanied by her parents - Urmi and Harshal Mamania.

Director-princpal of YPS Mohali T P S Waraich described Saanvi as an exceptional student passionate about mountaineering, cycling and skating.
