Seven-year-old dies with coronavirus as hospital deaths rise

A seven-year-old has died with Covid-19, NHS England has revealed.

In today's (May 19) update, the NHS has confirmed 227 UK hospital deaths with coronavirus in 24 hours, including 174 in England and nine in the South West.

Patients who died in England were aged between seven and 102 years old.

Six of the 174 patients (aged between 45 and 90) had no known underlying health condition. Their families have been informed.

The Office for National Statistics has confirmed more than 44,000 deaths with the virus in the UK.

It comes after the death toll at Bristol Royal Infirmary (BRI) rose by 12 in one week.

There have been 103 deaths with Covid-19 at the BRI and 111 at Southmead Hospital as of yesterday's (May 18) NHS England figures.

The figures from a week before, May 11, were 91 deaths at the city centre hospital and 108 at Southmead.

It brings the city's total death toll to 214.

Public Health England's update from yesterday showed Bristol's confirmed cases at 687 and South Gloucestershire's figure at 398.

North Somerset's figure had increased from 345 to 351, while Bath and North East Somerset had risen from 227 to 228.
