A seven-year-old boy on holiday from Japan has died in hospital after an incident at a public lagoon on Cairns Esplanade in Far North Queensland.
The boy and his parents only arrived in Australia on holiday on Saturday, and were at the lagoon when the boy got into trouble in the water just before 4:00pm that day.
A member of the public alerted lifeguards, who pulled the boy from the water and started resuscitation before critical care paramedics arrived.
He was rushed to Cairns Hospital in a critical condition where he remained overnight, but police said life support was turned off around midday on Sunday.
Police will prepare a report for the coroner.
The Cairns Esplanade Lagoon is located on the foreshore of the Trinity Harbour front and features a 4,800-square-metre saltwater swimming pool.
It ranges in depth from just under a metre to 1.5 metres and can accommodate 1,000 swimmers.
The swimming area is patrolled daily by life guards.
Meanwhile, a woman aged in her 60s was rescued from waters off Hamilton Island on Saturday afternoon.
She was flown to Mackay Hospital in a serious condition.
