Seven West Media hit with third round of layoffs in a year as regional staff face the axe

The publisher of the Sunday Times and The West Australian has gone through three rounds of layoffs in the past 12 months.

Seven West Media is calling for voluntary redundancies at its 19 regional Western Australian newspapers in another round of cost-cutting to hit the media group.

The appeal came in an email yesterday to staff at the group's regional mastheads, as well as staff at The West Australian and Sunday Times newspapers.

A Seven West Media spokesman would not confirm how many jobs would go but the company said all of the regional papers would continue to publish.

The losses would be the third round of redundancies at Seven West in the past 12 months.

In an email to employees, West Australian Regional Newspapers general manager Ian Jones said a regional editorial hub would be created in Perth to deliver "additional and relevant content".

"Other supporting functions (non-editorial) that are currently replicated … are also being reviewed with the intent of introducing more centralised or integrated workflows."

He said the move was part of an ongoing process "to reduce duplication of systems and processes across the entire group."

Mr Jones said an undisclosed number of new positions would be created to staff the new regional hub.

The changes are due to take place in the next two months.
