Seven ways to keep your child cool in hot weather - and why you should never cover pram

With temperatures expected to reach up to 30 degrees in parts of Scotland this weekend, it is vital to keep babies and young children cool.

The hot weather is great for getting out and about or enjoying the garden, but for youngsters, especially babies, it can become dangerous.

Here's some top tips on ensuring parents can enjoy the hot weather whilst keeping your little one is cool, safe and comfortable.

Never cover the buggy

You might think it's a good idea to put a blanket or even a thin piece of muslin over your baby's pram to allow them to sleep away from the glaring sun, but this is actually very dangerous.

Svante Norgren, a paediatrician at a children's hospital in Stockholm, told Swedish newspaper Svenska Dagbladet: "It gets extremely hot down in the pram, something like a Thermos. There is also bad circulation of the air and it is hard to see the baby with a cover over the pram."

According to their research temperatures went from 22C to 34C after a cover was applied.

Remove heavy bedding

It may seem obvious, but removing pyjamas and blankets is a great way to instantly cool down your child. Let them sleep in underwear or nappies with just a light cover. In the unlikely event they end up too cold, they will wake up and let you know.

Never EVER leave a child inside a hot car.

Again, another one that might sound obvious, but surprisingly people do this all the time.

No matter how quick you plan to be popping into that shop or house, never ever leave a child inside a car alone when it is hot outside.

Use cold cloths

Keep a cool cloth handy for wiping your child down periodically.

You can also give them a slightly cooler bath before bed to refresh them, but make sure it's quick to ensure they don't get too cold.

Use a paddling pool

A great and fun way of keeping children cool. Most kids love to play in water so a paddling pool ticks two boxes. Win-win.

Always apply sun cream

Apply suncream regularly and remember 'water-resistant- does not necessarily mean 'waterproof'. You will still need to reapply after the paddling pool, just to be on the safe side. Sunburn is no fun for anyone!

Use the shade

Finding something that offers a shaded area for your little one could prove vital. Make use of any shaded areas in your garden. if you're heading to the park or beach for the day it might be worth investing in a pop-up tent or wigwam. They don't cost the earth, come in relatively small, handy packaging and are great for keeping baby cool when you're out and about.
