Seven vehicles destroyed after fire engulfs Darwin car park

It is not known what sparked the blaze.

A witness has recalled seeing "explosions" and flames up to 30 metres high as emergency services battled a fire that engulfed a Darwin car park.

Seven cars were destroyed and another two damaged in the blaze, which took hold at the back of retail outlets in Berrimah, on the Stuart Highway about midday.

It is not known what caused the fire, but a total fire ban remains in place.

The blaze has now been extinguished.

Witness Olle Kubel, who works in the area, said he was unloading a truck when he smelt smoke.

"I went outside, there was a big fire. It started with like two cars, then went to eight cars or something like that," he said.

"[The flames] were pretty high up, maybe 20 or 30 metres and the explosions."

It is understood the cars belong to workers at a nearby furniture chain.

Acting Station Officer Trent Johnston said the main concern was exploding fuel tanks.

"There's plenty of fuelled vessels that can explode when they're heated up, as you would have heard when the fire was fully ablaze," he said.

"It's a total fire ban day today, so that's part of the reason everything spread so quickly.

"You can see it's windy around, the fire moved rapidly."

The cause of the fire is being investigated.
