Seven transfer decisions David Moyes and West Ham must make to form perfect 2021/22 squad

The January transfer window closed on Monday night with no further incomings at the London Stadium.

By Tuesday morning David Moyes was already talking about a 'rebuild come the summertime' for his squad.

West Ham's only signings this year have been future prospect Frederick Alves, converting Said Benrahma's loan into a permanent move and taking Jesse Lingard from Manchester United for five months temporary stay in East London

In the departures lounge, Robert Snodgrass was given a free transfer to West Bromwich Albion and club-record signing Sebastien Haller departed for a £20m loss to Ajax.

There were loan moves away from the club for youngsters Goncalo Cardoso, Oladapo Afolayan, and Aji Alese. Veteran centre-back Winston Reid also left the club temporarily crossing the capital to join Brentford for the remainder of the season.

West Ham transfer deadline day verdict

Moyes confirmed that he was given access to funds to spend on the squad and specifically a striker but with the right man not available this window he was not going to sign a player just to 'appease people.'

As the manager has mentioned a rebuild we thought now was the time to look at the decision he needs to make over the next few months:

Contracts Expiring

This summer sees four senior players come to the end of their contracts and the decisions Moyes makes on them will greatly affect where his priorities lie in the transfer market.

Lukasz Fabianski is the club's undisputed No.1, he turns 36 in April but is showing no signs of letting age catch up with him. Extending his contract will enable Moyes to concentrate on other areas of the pitch that need strengthening.

If the Pole is allowed to leave the club for free a new goalkeeper will be essential. Darren Randolph is an excellent back-up but not in the same category of class as Fabianski and whilst Nathan Trott has huge potential he is not ready for regular first-team action just yet.

David Martin's story at West Ham is a wonderful one and fans will be sad to see him leave, but with Trott gaining more experience Martin's time at the club could well be up when his contract finishes on June 30.

Moving into the defence a decision on the future of Fabian Balbuena will soon be needed. The Paraguayan began this season as one of the first-choice center-backs but since the festive period he has found himself relegated to third-choice behind Craig Dawson and Angelo Ogbonna.

At 29, Balbuena still has some good years ahead of him and will be hoping to prove his worth to the club over the remainder of the season.

The last player on this list will surely be the hardest of all for Moyes and the board to decide on.

Mark Noble is club captain and has played more than 500 games since joining the academy in 2003.

Noble has started five matches in all competitions this year and has been a regular off the bench in recent weeks.

Loans Expiring

Craig Dawson was signed on loan in October, it took him two months to get a start for The Hammers but since then he has been an ever-present, forming a terrific partnership with Ogbonna at the heart of the defence.

The 30-year-old's loan agreement contains an option to buy clause which West Ham can activate for around the £2million mark.

Jesse Lingard was West Ham's big January signing, his loan does not include an option or obligation to buy, and as things start he will return to Manchester United on July 1.

Striker Search

One position that needs to be filled no matter what Moyes decides on the above six players is the spot in the squad left vacant by Haller.

The number of strikers West Ham have been linked to in recent weeks could almost fill the London Stadium, yet none arrived. Moyes wanted a striker, he said he 'needed' one, but with the right man not available he is playing the long game.

The club now has five months to scour the globe for exactly the man Moyes believes is 'the right type of player.'
