Seven-tonne lorry ploughed into car in Airdrie after speeding out of junction

An Airdrie man whose seven-tonne lorry crashed into a car next to the Four Isles pub in Petersburn has avoided a charge for dangerous driving.

Delivery driver James Frame, 51, caused a collision at the junction of Varnsdorf Way and Glen Road last December.

The Rawyards Avenue man appeared at Airdrie Sheriff Court last week without a solicitor and having admitted a dangerous driving charge.

Sheriff Scott Pattison afforded him the opportunity to have that reduced to careless driving, though, as Frame wasn’t aware a mandatory disqualification was coming his way.

The procurator fiscal said: “As the witness approached the junction, he observed the accused travelling at great speed.

“The witness sounded the horn to alert the accused as he thought he wasn’t aware of his vehicle.

“He passed the junction and felt a collision with the rear offside of his vehicle, causing it to spin 180 degrees and mount the kerb.

“Police were called and the road was closed due to debris.

“The accused injured his neck in the incident and paramedics attended.”

Sheriff Pattison asked Frame: “Are you aware that disqualification is mandatory to a plea of guilt for dangerous driving?”

Frame admitted he didn’t, and once Sheriff Pattison had clarified Frame works as a delivery driver, he offered the accused the chance to plead guilty to the reduced charge of careless driving.

Frame agreed and Sheriff Pattison fined him £750 and added eight points to his licence, which already had three on it.

He said: “You now need to watch yourself, big time.”
