Seven sought for 2006 killings in far South

Police will seek warrants for the arrest of seven people suspected of involvement in a deadly gun attack and weapons theft dating back to July 2006 in Pattani's Sai Buri district.

Pattani police chief Pol Maj Gen Piyawat Chalermsri said the move follows the recent arrest of Muhamad Kosafi Adae, 39, who admitted his involvement in the offences that left three policeman dead and one injured.

According to Pol Maj Gen Piyawat, the suspect confessed to driving the pickup truck used in the attack and implicated seven other men in the shooting and robbery.

Those implicated by the suspect were named as Ibrohem Maseng, Suding Konae, Mayuddin Baka, Sormuelee Sareh, Badran Laeni, Hasan Wamae, and a man identified only as Jopi.

Mr Maseng was named as the person who allegedly procured the pickup truck and weapons used in the attack.

The incident took place on July 20, 2006 when a group of armed men in a pick-up truck opened fire on a police booth in Moo 1, tambon Trohbon, killing three policemen and injuring another. The armed men then stormed the police booth and stole 10 guns.

Mr Adae arrested while intelligence officers and police from Sai Buri police station were hunting suspects wanted under an arrest warrant issued by the Pattani court in a more recent case. Mr Adae's DNA in that case matched samples taken after the 2006 incident.

The suspect admitted to interrogators that he joined a militant group in 1999 and had taken part in 2006 attack. He was taken for a reenactment of the 2006 attack yesterday.
