More than £1.8 million in funding has been accepted by Glasgow City Council to develop seven temporary pop up bus lanes across the city.
Members of the city administration will receive the money from the Bus Priority Rapid Develop Fund (BPRDF) with just over £1 million applying to the local authority.
BPRDF aims to help areas of Scotland with the highest concentration of congestion to implement temporary measures, including bus lanes or gates, which make bus journeys quicker and more reliable for passengers.
It is hoped that this in turn will support the bus industry by incentivising bus trips ahead of private vehicle journeys.
The stops, which will remain in place for 18 months, will be seen along Paisley Road West – outside Bellahouston Park, Bothwell Street – between Pitt Street and Hope Street and King George V Bridge.
Renfrew Street – between Cambridge Street and Renfield Street, sections of the A803 Springburn Expressway, Barrhead Road – between Pollok Roundabout and Crookston Road, Braidcraft Road -between Pollok Roundabout and Corkerhill Road will also see temporary bus lanes developed.
The city council also intends to investigate if it is feasible to install a pop-up bus lane on the Clydeside Expressway as a trial.
A council spokeswoman said: “We have been looking at corridors across the region which cross boundaries which connect outlying communities to the city centre.
“The pop-up bus lanes were done in conjunction with a regional group from SPT and the bus operators themselves who provided a lot of data about where they were experiencing congestion.”
Funding will also be used to undertake signal improvements, loop repairs and bus traffic signal priority where pop up bus lanes are provided.
There is also money available for communications, monitoring and evaluation together with the removal of any temporary measures if required.
The measures implemented will be evaluated to make them permanent where possible and with full local consultation. A further report will be submitted to the appropriate committee.
