'Seven positive cases of coronavirus' at Tullamore food processing plant in Co Offaly

Seven staff members at a food processing plant in Co Offaly have reportedly tested positive for Covid-19.

Carrolls in Tullamore said all staff were tested after one confirmed case in the plant last week.

As a result six further cases were identified and all seven are now self-isolating.

More than 300 people work at the processing plant and all have been tested in recent days - Agriland reports.

The company said in a statement: "We are supporting our affected employees and are working closely and co-operatively with the HSE who are satisfied with the actions we are taking."

The Irish Mirror has contacted the company for an update.

A deep clean of the premises has taken place while production was put on a scheduled shut-down.

How might a Covid vaccine work?

The company hopes to be fully back up and running again in the coming days after following all protocols.

Dr Ronan Glynn has warned of outbreaks in workplaces in recent weeks as cases began to rise again.

The acting CMO said: "We are now seeing outbreaks of the virus in a range of work settings, including in construction, in fast food outlets and in supermarkets.

"We can't underestimate how quickly clusters develop.

"We have come so far together, but we need to stay vigilant to prevent a resurgence across the whole country in the coming weeks."
