Seven players Notts County could target in the National League

There remains plenty of uncertainty at Meadow Lane as Notts County prepare for a shock season in non-league.

The National League remains a frustrating and difficult division to be promoted from, with only two promotion places available.

With fans still questioning who will be in charge both at boardroom level and in the dug-out come August, there's also plenty of speculation as to who will be on the playing staff, with Notts needing to replace 12 players heading out of the door.

So here are seven players who the Magpies could target for a summer move to Meadow Lane...

Who will come out on top? Ex-Notts loan duo to compete football's most expensive game

Paris Cowan-Hall

Ex-Portsmouth and Millwall midfielder Cowan-Hall had his own song a Wycombe to the tune of Oasis' Wonderwall.

That alone goes to show how popular the 28-year-old was at Adams Park.

Over two spells in Buckinghamshire and a loan, the jet-heeled wide man made 169 appearances.

Despite scoring 30 goals from mostly wide areas, eight of which came during a successful promotion season from the fourth tier in 2018, the London-born star has been named as one of seven stars released by Wanderers boss Gareth Ainsworth.

Anthony Kay

Kay started life a defensive midfielder, but really came into his own as a centre-back during four incredibly successful years at MK Dons.

Having worn the captain's armband for the Dons, Bury and Port Vale, the 36-year-old could provide the composure in defence and leadership that Notts will need to get out of the National League.

Last week he was deemed surplus to requirements by Vale boss John Askey, bringing an end to two seasons in League Two.

Tyrone Barnett

Barnett cut his teeth in non-league.

After being released by West Brom as a teenager, the burly centre forward joined nearby Rushall Olympic before gradually climbing the pyramid.

His career highlights came in League Two for Macclesfield Town and Crawley, but he has starred as high as the Championship.

After a poor season in the fourth tier the 33-year-old has now been released by Cheltenham and could prove an ideal replacement for the departing Jon Stead.

He certainly wouldn't be against making the step down to the National League.

Jim O'Brien open to Notts County return but waits for news on Neal Ardley's future

Matty Kosylo

Linked with a move to Yeovil Town at the start of the month, tricky wide man Kosylo has been a stand out performer for National League Halifax Town for three seasons now.

Signed in National League North , the 26-year-old has scored 24 goals from midfield for the Shaymen and is believed to be weighing up his options for next season.

Kosylo would provide some experienced know-how of non-league football.

The seven games which shaped Notts County’s season

Reuben Reid

Lower league goal-machine Reid has been 'transfer-listed' by Forest Green Rovers.

Reid, 30, has scored 130 goals for 14 different clubs since making his Football League debut as a teenager.

However, since helping steer Rovers clear of the drop last season, his potent form has taken a dip.

Notts would have to fight off a number of League Two, and maybe even League One clubs, if they are to land this one - but there is little doubt that he would be a real threat in the National League.

Nathan Tyson

Tyson spent seven years in East Midlands during his time with Nottingham Forest and Derby County, but this summer joined Cowan-Hall in being released from Wycombe.

Now aged 37, the striker will be looking for what could be his final club and Meadow Lane could prove a welcome retirement home in the National League.

Prolific for Wycombe during his first spell, Tyson epitomises pace and power, even at his veteran age.

Jon Stead says emotional goodbye to Notts County

Sam Foley

Should Jim O'Brien, Jim O'Brien open to Notts County return but waits for news on Neal Ardley's future, have played his final game for the Magpies then workhorse Sam Foley would prove a positive replacement.

The intelligent central midfielder is far too good for the National League, but under new ownership he could be tempted to fill O'Brien's boots

Despite being one of only a few players to steer clear of Northampton boss Keith Curle's public slamming of his players last month, he has not been offered a new deal at Sixfields and is free for the Magpies to poach should they wish.
