Seven new Covid deaths today as cases rise in Bristol area again

Nearly 2,000 new cases of Covid-19 were confirmed in the Bristol region today (Friday, January 28), marking a rise compared to yesterday.

A total of 1,847 new cases of Covid-19 were confirmed across the Bristol area today (compared to 1,658 yesterday), bringing the total number of cases since the pandemic began to 275,060.

Seven new deaths with 28 days of a positive Covid-19 test were sadly confirmed across our region in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of lives lost to 1,744.

At the national level, a total of 89,176 new cases were recorded today, and 1,828 deaths within 28 days of a positive test were also confirmed. This represents a drop in cases of 2.7 per cent over the past seven days, and a drop of 2.7 per cent in deaths as well.

In Bristol today, a parent has shared her concerns after a rapid rise in coronavirus cases among a year group at a primary school. It's understood that St Stephen's CofE Junior School in Kingswood has had 15 students and one teacher test positive for Covid-19 over the past two weeks, and there is growing apprehension among parents at the school.

Additionally, the West of England mayor, Dan Norris, has pleaded with Bristolians to continue wearing face coverings, saying they are "completely sensible" and have "helped save lives". This comes after Plan B rules expired, meaning that masks are no longer legally mandated in many settings.

The number of positive test results in each area of the Bristol region since the pandemic began is recorded below, with new positive test results recorded today in brackets:

  • City of Bristol: 119,141 (+813)

  • North Somerset: 45,530 (+325)

  • South Gloucestershire: 67,692 (+469)

  • Bath and North East Somerset: 42,697 (+240)

The number of deaths recorded in each area of Bristol since the beginning of the pandemic is as follows, with new deaths within 28 days of a positive test in brackets:

  • City of Bristol: 639 (+4)

  • North Somerset: 398 (+1)

  • South Gloucestershire: 424 (+2)

  • Bath and North East Somerset: 283 (-)

Nationally a further 89,176 cases were recorded in the UK today, and another 277 people have died within 28 days of a positive test.
