Seven injured in shell attack on medical centre run by Denton based charity in Syria

A doctor and six patients were injured when a medical centre in Syria run by a charity based in Tameside was shelled.

The facility south of the city of Idlib was hit by at least five shells in what bosses say was a "deliberate" and "targeted" attack on Thursday afternoon.

Medic Yousef al Hussein, 26, and five people were among those injured in the blasts at the building, which had around 150 people in at the time.

One of the female patients, suffered serious stomach injuries and was critically ill but is now stable, bosses said.

Mr Hussein and the five others are expected to make a full recovery.

However the building itself, vital equipment and medicines have been destroyed  in a bitter blow for local charity Syria Relief.

Set up at the start of the conflict in 2011, and based at offices in Denton town centre , they have grown to become the largest Syria-focused NGO in the UK.

In a statement today they said: "It is with great regret Syria Relief have to announce that one of our Primary Healthcare Centres (PHC) in southern Idlib was the target of shelling at 12.15 (Syrian time on Thursday.

"One of the Syria Relief medical team and six patients were injured by the shelling, one of whom, is in a serious condition.

"The PHC was hit by more than 5 shells, causing significant damage to the building and equipment.

"We believe this to be a deliberate attack.

"The facility could not have been confused for a legitimate military target.

"It is a charity-run health centre to treat patients. It should not have been targeted for war. It is of no threat to anyone. On the contrary, it is there to save lives."

Charles Lawley, spokesman for the charity said the conflict was now entering "one of its bloodiest phases."

"As well as health centres we run a large number of schools and four of those have been hit since June and one child has sadly died and others have been injured.

"We are repeating our calls to all actors in this conflict to obey international law and cease any attacks on hospitals, health centres, schools and other civilian infrastructure.

The charity are appealing for donations to help them deal with the aftermath of these attacks.
