Seven foot, 300 pound shark caught off coast of west Cork

A rare seven foot, 300 pound shark was caught off the coast of Cork last week.

The porbeagle shark - often mistaken for a great white because of its appearance - was caught and released by Connor O'Reilly off west Cork on Tuesday.

Porbeagle sharks are rare on these shores, but are believed to be making a comeback due to the ban on commercial fishing for them, Cork Beo reports.

David Edwards of West Cork Charters said it was the "biggest we have seen in our area for many years".

Dave added: "The Porbeagle Shark that isn't so clear in the photos is the one that surprised us as it's the largest off West Cork for many years.

"It looks like they have recovered from commercial over fishing as I have received two more reports of sightings from reliable sources.

"They do grow even bigger than the 300 pound one that we caught and are sometimes mistakenly reported as Great Whites as they look very similar in shape and mouth."

The porbeagle has very rarely, if ever, bitten swimmers or boats and there is no recorded fatal incidents involving the species across the world.

Porbeagles feed on lancet fish, mackerel, pilchards, herring, and sauries and other small fish.

This wasn't the only big catch this week after the third blue shark of the season was caught on Tuesday as well off the West Cork coast.

John Dillon got his hands on the huge shark, posing for a picture to emphasise just how big it is before he released it back into the sea.

Blue sharks are a bit more common off our coasts at this time of year.
