Seven events Scots can look forward to this summer as restrictions ease

The excitement of the Euros has died down, and many are now in limbo waiting for restrictions to ease.

Scotland is set to move to Level 0 on July 19, with rules on gatherings, events, weddings and socialising in pubs and restaurants to ease.

There is still plenty of things to look forward to this summer as we hopefully near the end of the pandemic and things return to normal.

Here’s our guide to all the events, sports and spectacles still to savour this summer.

Scottish Premiership season

The new Scottish Premiership season starts on July 31.

Champions Rangers kick off their Scottish Premiership title defence at home to Livingston, while Celtic are at newly-promoted Hearts, both live on Sky Sports on Saturday, July 31.

Under Level 0 restrictions, at least 2000 spectators can attend outdoor events, including football matches.

TRNSMT

TRNSMT music festival has become a firm fixture on the music scene in Scotland since its launch in 2017.

Fans were devastated when the festival was cancelled last year due to the pandemic.

It was originally rescheduled for July 2021, but this was pushed back to September 10-12 to allow more time for social distancing restrictions to be lifted.

Taking place over three consecutive nights at Glasgow Green, the festival will feature a full lineup of acts including Liam Gallagher, Primal Scream, Twin Atlantic, Sam Fender, Blossoms and AJ Tracey.

Edinburgh Fringe Festival

Edinburgh Festival Fringe is set to return in August after the capital’s famous event was cancelled last year due to coronavirus.

This year, things will look a little different as the festival will feature a mix of in-person and virtual shows.

Many performances will take place in custom-made outdoor venues to provide extra ventilation, and indoor venues will limit audience numbers to ensure social distancing.

The Edinburgh Fringe Festival will last from August 6 to 31.

The Open

The Scottish Open may be over, but golf fans still have The Open to look forward to.

Bob MacIntyre is flying the Saltire on his own as the only Scottish player as the competition makes a welcome return after being cancelled last year due to the Covid-19 crisis.

The 149th Open tees off at Royal St George’s in Sandwich, Kent, on Thursday. Watch on Sky Sports or Now TV.

Olympics

Team GB will be hungry for golds when the Olympics get going in Tokyo next Friday. After cleaning up in Rio in 2016 with 67 medals, hopes are high for more glory.

Ones to watch include swimmer Adam Peaty, boxer Pat McCormack and cycling’s golden couple Jason and Laura Kenny.

Watch the opening ceremony at midday next Friday on BBC One.

British & Irish Lions South Africa tour

The six-week tour has kicked off with victories against club sides already in the bag for Warren Gatland’s men ahead of the first test on July 24.

Scotland has its biggest representation on the tour since 1989 during this summer’s trip to South Africa, with eight players in the squad.

With more action tomorrow in Cape Town, fans are braced for a tough tournament against the world champions. Watch on Sky Sports or Now TV.

Tour de France

We’re already in the final week with the riders nearing Paris, where the event wraps up on Sunday.

It’s been an incredible return for Mark Cavendish, who equalled Eddy Merckx’s record of 34 stage wins on Friday when he picked up his fourth victory at this year’s race.

The first comes in Libourne which starts at 12.20pm on July 16.
