Seven-Eleven stores in Japan to launch discount service to reduce food loss

Seven-Eleven Japan Co. will launch a discount service at all of its roughly 21,000 stores nationwide on May 11.

The discount service will cover food items, such as bento meal boxes, onigiri rice balls and sandwiches that have almost reached their expiration date. Should a customer buy such items, they could receive reward points equivalent to 5% of the sales price, excluding tax.

Stickers will be placed on some items to be discounted five hours before its time of expiration.

Only customers utilizing the nanaco electronic payment system of Seven and i Holdings can receive reward points, which can use be used on their next purchase.

Each convenience store is focusing its efforts toward reducing food loss by avoiding the discarding of unsold meals. The company has confirmed the efficiency of this food loss reduction method after implementing a run-through this discount service in regions including Hokkaido and Shikoku since the end of October 2019.
