The University of Sussex has recently been named as one of the 50 most international universities in the world by Times Higher Education, which takes into account our percentage of international staff and students and the proportion of research papers published with a co-author from another country. Here are some of the other factors we think make Sussex a truly international university:
1. Our heritage
Since our founding over 50 years ago, Sussex has welcomed staff and students from around the world. From the start, our research has addressed global issues – an approach that is still our priority today.
2. Students from every continent
Around 20 per cent of Sussex students come from outside the UK, joining us from over 120 countries worldwide to help build a multicultural campus community. Many of our students take international work placements or study abroad during their degree, helping them prepare for the global workplace once they graduate.
3. Research with global impact
Whether we’re working to discover a treatment for podoconiosis in Ethiopia, or enhancing global climate-change policy, Sussex academic staff are engaged in research that has real impact on populations and individuals worldwide. A key goal is to continue to develop new opportunities for collaboration and knowledge exchange in our efforts to tackle the most pressing global issues.
4. Staff from 50 countries
The University’s teaching and research faculty includes staff from over 50 countries, who each bring a unique perspective to their research and teaching. We aim to attract global expertise, regardless of national boundaries.
5. Sussex alumni go everywhere
We have almost 150,000 alumni, living in nearly 200 countries, forming one global community. Sussex graduates have gone on to change the world as CEOs, entrepreneurs, writers, academics - even presidents of their country.
6. The campus melting-pot
Visitors to Sussex immediately notice our vibrant multicultural atmosphere. Annual events like Holi, Chinese New Year and One World Week are a highlight of the calendar, and a chance to experience different cultures and traditions. There are also over 25 students’ union societies focused on culture and language, so there’s no excuse not to make new friends.
7. Friends abroad
Sussex is continually building connections to other institutions around the world, creating new possibilities for research collaborations, staff and student exchanges and academic symposia. Our partners include Georgetown University in the US, Mahidol University in Thailand, and the Chinese University of Hong Kong, with more partnerships in the pipeline.
