PRACHUAP KHIRI KHAN: Seven people were killed and two others injured in a three-vehicle crash on Phetkasem road in Bang Saphan district on Monday morning.

The crash occurred about 6.45am near the 386-kilometre marker in tambon Ronthong and involved a pickup truck, a sport utility vehicle and a six-wheel truck carrying rubber scrap.

Emergency units sent to the scene found six men dead in the SUV, which was wedged under the six-wheel truck on the Bangkok-bound lane. The male driver of the truck was also dead and his female passenger injured.

The pickup was found on the roadside of the outbound lane. The driver was injured.

It took rescue teams more than two hours to extract the six bodies from the wrecked SUV. They were taken to Bang Saphan Hospital for post-mortem examination.

Traffic on both sides of Phetkasem road came to a halt for the rescue and clean-up activities. The road was reopened to traffic shortly after 9am.

Police said their initial investigation found the pickup truck was heading south and the driver lost control. The six-wheel truck following him veered into the oncoming traffic lane to avoid hitting the pickup, turned over and landed on top of the SUV, which was heading toward Bangkok.

A thorough investigation was underway.
