Seven counties hit by staggering rise in Covid cases as virus spreads across the country

Seven counties have been hit by a staggering rise in coronavirus cases over the last two weeks as Covid-19 continues to spread across Ireland.

One of the key measures used by health officials to determine the level of infection in a particular area is the 14-day incidence rate of confirmed cases per 100,000 population.

And a total of six counties are now reporting a higher incidence than Dublin, which was previously the epicentre of the outbreak here, while the capital itself still remains hard hit with a rate of 174.6.

Donegal remains the area with the highest rate of cases on 344.9, but Cavan is now not far behind on 338.7.

Monaghan has also seen a skyrocketing number of infections with a current incidence of 319.3.

There has also been a noticeable spike in numbers in Clare (260.1), Longford (208.0), Roscommon (184.4), Meath (183.0) and Limerick (160.1).

Overall, just seven counties are now reporting an incidence of less than 100: Carlow, Kilkenny, Leitrim, Mayo, Tipperary, Waterford and Wicklow.

It is a huge change from just two weeks ago in the figures reported on Monday, September 28.

That day, only three counties had an incidence higher than 100 (Donegal, Dublin and Monaghan), while Donegal's rate was still far lower than it is now, standing at 191.0.

Clare and Longford, which are both now over 200, had rates of just 49.7 and 48.9 respectively two weeks ago.

Here are the latest incidence rate figures for every county in Ireland:
