Seven cases in Hunter as student with 'no travel link' contracts Omicron

BEYOND FLIGHTS: The latest Omicron case has no links to overseas travel, NSW Health believes.

A WESTERN Sydney high school student has been confirmed as the state's ninth Omicron case. NSW Health said the student had been dismissed for the year from Regents Park Christian School, and contact tracers were investigating.

"NSW Health is concerned the virus may have been acquired in the community as the case has no overseas travel history or links to people with overseas travel history," NSW Health said.

The Hunter added seven cases in Friday's update.

Newcastle, Singleton and Lake Macquarie all added new infections.

Both of Newcastle's were from New Lambton, while Cardiff and Singleton township rounded out the region's list.

The remaining three Hunter New England cases fell in Midcoast Council's Cedar Party, Old Bar and Wingham.

All but one of the seven cases were infectious in the community, with two cases linked to past cases or clusters.

Hunter New England Health said the region now has 287 active cases, with two in intensive care.

Testing numbers in the region surpassed 5000 just one day in the week to Wednesday, peaking at 5656 across the broader health district.

Two days before they hit the seven-day period's nadir, with just 2615 tests conducted.
