Seven candidates set to face off in Liverpool mayoral election

The seven candidates in the running to become mayor of Liverpool have been finalised.

The deadline for nominations in May’s elections passed yesterday afternoon, with candidate lists now published for mayoral and council elections in Liverpool.

Labour, who currently hold the mayoralty, will face candidates from five other political parties as well as independent candidate Stephen Yip.

Next month’s poll will occur after an extended period of political turmoil in the city.

The arrest of former mayor Joe Anderson in December and an ensuing government investigation has culminated in a series of damning revelations about how parts of the council have operated in the past.

Government commissioners will soon arrive in the city to oversee an overhaul of part of its operations.

Joanne Anderson, the Labour candidate, will be aiming to ensure the party’s hold on the mayoralty continues despite those events.

Ms Anderson, a councillor for Princes Park, will face three candidates who are also already representatives on the council in Lib Dem candidate Richard Kemp, Green candidate Tom Crone and Liberal Party candidate Steve Radford.

They are joined by Conservative Party candidate Katie Burgess and the Trade Union and Socialist Coalition’s Roger Bannister.

Stephen Yip, who entered the race earlier this year on a platform of cleaning up the city’s politics, is the only independent candidate in this year’s race.

Voters in the city are being encouraged to apply for postal votes ahead of the election to minimise the number of people who need to attend polling stations on May 6.

In Liverpool’s mayoral election, voters list two candidates for a first and second preference.

If no candidate gets more than 50% of the vote, the second preference votes are allocated to the top two candidates.

Who are the candidates standing for mayor in May?

Joanne Marie Anderson, Labour Party

Roger Bannister, Trade Union and Socialist Coalition

Katie Maria Burgess, Conservative Party

Tom Crone, Green Party

Richard Kemp, Liberal Democrat

Steve Radford, Liberal Party

Stephen Barry Loy Yip, Independent
