Seven people, including innocent bystanders, were killed when gunfire erupted Sunday in the Mexican town of Guachochi.

"Some of the victims were riding vehicles or walking along the El Lobito and Turuseachi neighborhoods when they were struck by bullets from a confrontation between armed civilians," the Chihuahua Attorney General's Office said in a statement to Border Report on Tuesday.

Among those hit by gunfire was a two-year-old infant. Authorities told Border Report that four men and two women, as well as the 2-year-old infant, were treated for wounds at local clinics. Later, police found two more victims, a 25-year-old male and a 26-year-old female, lying on the street.

Of those nine, it is unclear which victims eventually died from their injuries, but police reported seven total fatalities. According to El Instante, among those caught in the cross fire between was a school teacher. The outlet reported that the teacher and several others were in a vehicle that gunmen mistook as belonging to a rival group.

Guachochi is a popular tourist draw and the site of the Ultramaratón de los Cañones. The race draws participants from around the world. The race is known for its view of the Copper Canyon, which is visible throughout.

"Along with the Ultramarathon, Guachochi has a party, a cultural festival, a popular festival and races for children, events that take place around the Ultramarathon to receive the competitors and their families," the event website states.
