Seven bodies of missing climbers recovered in India's Himalayas

Seven bodies have been recovered from a mountain in India's Himalayas, including one woman, Indian police have said.

Eight climbers, including Australian Ruth McCance, were reported missing in late May after they failed to return to their base camp near Nanda Devi, India's second-highest mountain.

Ms McCance was the only woman in the group who were believed to have been killed in an avalanche.

Bodies were spotted 500 meters below where the team was hit, and a recovery mission began in early June but was hampered by harsh weather and technical problems.

The Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITPB) said in a tweet that its mountaineers had now recovered the bodies from under the snow.

The search for the eighth missing person will continue tomorrow, the ITBP said.

Ms McCance was an experienced amateur climber who had previously been on expeditions in India's Ladakh region.

The other climbers were John Mclaren, Rupert Whewell and Richard Payne from the United Kingdom, Anthony Sudekum and Ronald Beimel from the United States, and Indian guide Chetan Pandey.

They were being led by renowned UK-based mountain guide Martin Moran.

When they failed to return to base camp, mountaineers searched a higher camp and found the group's tents empty.

They were originally part of a team of 12 climbers, but four turned back to base camp while the remaining eight pushed on.

Ms McCance had recently returned to mountaineering after giving it up due to the danger but was very well prepared for the trip, having completed expeditions to high altitudes and trained in Australia, New Zealand and Europe.

It has been one of the deadliest climbing seasons in the Himalayas for several years.

More than 20 people have been killed in the mountains, including 11 on Mount Everest, the world's highest peak, which has been plagued by poor weather, inexperienced climbers and overcrowding.
