Seven areas of Wales see Covid rates rise in the last week

Seven Welsh local authorities have seen a rise in Covid rates in the last week.

Ceredigon, Denbighshire, Merthyr and Conwy all saw percentage increases in double figures while Caerphilly, Newport and Torfaen also saw rises.

It should be added however that both Ceredigion and Merthyr have low rates and small populations which can make their numbers more volatile.

Meanwhile, of Wales' 22 local authorities, four of them saw a fall of more than 25% in coronvirus levels between Friday, February 19 and Friday, February 26.

They were Vale of Glamorgan, Rhondda Cynon Taf, Neath Port Talbot and Wrexham.

Cardiff, which had seen the biggest growth last week had a drop of nearly 5%, putting the rate per 100,000 below 100.

It is also important to stress that a rise in cases comes at a time when the virus is suppressed in Wales to a level that we have not seen since last September. This means that a small number of cases can skew the data.

We've gone through Public Health Wales data to see the spread of the disease in Wales. We compared the figures released on February 16 with the week before.

These figures are seven-day rolling totals for new cases adjusted for population ( per 100,000 people ). It is important to remember that though these figures are a useful guide, they are just part of the story. You can see the communities in Wales with the highest infection rates here.

If testing massively increases in one place there is likely to be a rise in confirmed cases, and areas with small populations like Ceredigion can see their figures change quite dramatically after just a few cases.

However, these figures are still a vital factor in Welsh Government and Public Health Wales decision-making.
