Seven areas of Merseyside to be flooded by police after 'serious violence' on streets

A crackdown on individuals involved in "serious violent crime" in Birkenhead will be extended after a number of "assaults" in the area.

On Wednesday police said Birkenhead and surrounding areas will be subjected to the order known as Section 60 until 4am this morning.

The powers allow police to stop and search anyone in the area they believe to be carrying weapons or involved in serious violence.

Today the force has announced an extension of the powers for a third night following reports of a "number of assaults."

The Section 60 resumed at 1pm today and will run until 4am tomorrow ( Saturday.)

The area covers Birkenhead North, Birkenhead town centre, Beechwood and Noctorum estates, Oxton, Claughton and Prenton.

Officers in Wirral are introducing a Section 60 order in Birkenhead this evening (Wednesday 17 March) following reports of serious violent crime in the area. (Merseyside Police)

Community policing inspector Tom Welch: "Following assaults and reports of violent crime in the area covered by this order, we have chosen to extend the Section 60 in order to help prevent further danger in the community.
