Seven areas in Edinburgh with rising Covid cases amid Indian variant fears in Scotland

Official figures have revealed the Edinburgh neighbourhoods with the highest Covid rates.

Data from Public Health Scotland for the seven days up to Saturday, May 15, shows that there are seven areas that are in higher coronavirus alert categories.

Craigmillar has the highest rate in the capital. The area is the second-highest virus rate category, with a seven-day rate per 100,000 204.

In the third-highest category - which is a seven-day rate of between 100-199 - there are six other neighbourhoods.

These are Muirhouse, Niddrie, Meadowbank and Abbeyhill North, South Gyle, West Pilton, Hyvots and Gilmerton

11 other areas in the capital have a case rate of between 50-99.

All other neighbourhoods in the city are in the lowest alert category.

Meanwhile, Midlothian is one of the worst-hit areas in Scotland when it comes to surging coronavirus cases, as new infections doubled in just a week.

The local authority, which borders Edinburgh, is one of four council areas in the country with case rates higher than the level two threshold of 50.

Midlothian has a rate of 55.2 as the virus continues to spread but was moved down to level two on Monday along with much of mainland Scotland, excluding Glasgow and Moray.

Devi Sridhar has warned that relaxing Covid restrictions too soon risks a third wave of the pandemic and is urging those yet to be vaccinated to still only meet outdoors.

Writing in the Guardian, she said: "The UK has not fully vaccinated enough of the population to avoid a third wave among younger people that could still strain the NHS."

"We’re now in a race between the spread of the virus (especially as we begin to mix more freely) and getting jabs into arms."
