Seven fire appliances helped subdue a blaze at Derry industrial estate on Wednesday.

Firefighters were called to the Clooney Road area of the city on at 10.08am after a fire broke out.

Thick black smoke could be seen from the surrounding area as a crane loader was set alight.

Fire crews from stations across the area were pressed into action, as crews from four fire stations across Derry were called to deal what has been described as an "accidental ignition".

A Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue spokesperson said: "Firefighters were called to a fire at Clooney Road, Derry this morning.

"Seven fire appliances attended the incident from three Crescent Link Fire Station, two from Northland Fire Station, one from Limavady Fire Station and one from Maghera Fire Station.

"A crane loader was on fire, and had spread to nearby containers. Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used jets to extinguish the fire.

"The incident was under control by 1.38pm and the cause of the fire is believed to be accidental ignition."

The fire comes only a few weeks after a larger blaze broke out at the city's Foyle Port in the same vincity.
