Setback for newly-formed chess body in Bengal

KOLKATA: In a major setback for the Sara Bangla Daba Sangstha (SBDS), the court of Ld Fourth Civil Judge (senior division) at Alipore has restrained the newly-formed state chess body from taking control of the power of Bengal Chess Association (BCA).

The SBDS has also been directed to restrain “from hosting any competition or tournament” till July 30.

The SBDS, whose website was launched in the city last month by All India Chess Federation (AICF) president Sanjay Kapoor and secretary Bharat Singh Chauhan, has already organised an online tournament earlier this month and is scheduled to stage another two-day tournament. It now remains to be seen if they go ahead with the meet.

The BCA had moved the court seeking an injunction after the AICF disaffiliated the BCA in its general body meeting on June 10 and formed the SBDS to run the game in Bengal.

Chauhan stated that BCA had not followed the AICF constitution and the national sports code along with not paying the annual affiliation fee. However, he did not specify which codes they have breached. Interestingly, it's the AICF which is facing a court case for not adhering to national sports code in its last election process.

The AICF had also previously appointed ad hoc and special committees to run chess in the state but court directions stopped their operations.

The new office-bearers of BCA came to power last year after a court-appointed observer conducted the polls. In a fight between panels put up by erstwhile BCA secretary Atanu Lahirii and Grandmaster Dibyendu Barua, the former’s camp emerged winners with Atanu's brother Shantanu defeating Barua 14-9 for the president's post.
