To help reduce plastic waste that is seriously polluting the environment, the Setagaya Ward has targeted plastic bottles by installing water purifiers in the ward office so people can refill for free.

According to the ward, households in Setagaya produce 2,864 tons of Pet bottle waste every year, which is equivalent to 190 million 500-milliliter plastic bottles.

There are two purifiers that anyone can use, and the ward will continue the project on a trial basis until March 2023. The reduction of Pet bottles will be calculated from the amount of water distributed by the purifiers and the ward will examine issues such as maintenance to evaluate promotion of the concept.
