Hunter State Emergency Service crews are bracing for calls as a storm cell makes its way over the region.
A severe weather warning was issued for the Hunter on Thursday with a low pressure system sitting over the coast, bringing strong southerly winds and big swells.
Wind gusts of up to 63km/h have been felt at Nobbys during the day with peak gusts of more than 90km/h predicted in some areas during the afternoon.
Hunter SES crews had received less than 10 calls for assistance by 3pm Thursday, but spokesperson Alex Varley said local units were on standby as the damaging winds pick up.
But she said the wild weather wasn't expected to be anything out of the norm for storm season.
"Nothing like we're seeing up in Queensland at the moment," Ms Varley said.
Winds are expected to ease by Friday morning as the system moves offshore.
