Serving Scots transport cop sacked by police chiefs after drink driving conviction

A serving Scots transport cop has been sacked after being convicted of drink-driving.

PC Thomas Griffin, based in Edinburgh, was dismissed without notice by British Transport Police chiefs following a fast-tracked misconduct hearing this week.

Griffin attended the hearing on Monday and answered allegations that he breached the standards of professional behaviour, namely 'discreditable conduct'.

He was dismissed with immediate effect by the Chief Constable.

In June this year the cop had pleaded guilty to the offence of driving with excess alcohol and was convicted of s.5(1)(a) of the Road Traffic Act 1988.

Chief Constable, Lucy D’Orsi, said: “Any conviction of a police officer is a serious matter that undermines confidence in policing. Policing is entrusted to uphold the law and this trust is diminished when police officers break the law.”

“Drink driving is a serious offence. The level of intoxication and the risk of harm which may have been caused to the public, and PC Griffin himself, was significant.

“PC Griffin’s conduct amounts to gross misconduct. As a result, I have dismissed him from service with immediate effect.”
